Four years, six months and one day after the British voted in favour of their exit from the European Union, the United Kingdom and the EU27 have reached an agreement on future relations that completes the unique Brexit process. This is the first time that a country has voluntarily left the European Union.
“We have finally reached an agreement. It is honest, balanced and fair for both parties”, said the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, who acknowledged that she was relieved. “Together we can achieve more than each of us on our own,” she added. “We can finally leave Brexit behind, the European Union can move forward”.
“We are one in the European Union and we have proved it in the most difficult times”, the President of the European Commission stressed. “It is time to turn the page and look to the future. The United Kingdom is a third partner, but a reliable one”. She concluded how this ending can be the beginning of a new phase of prosperity.
The British government issued a statement as soon as it became known that there was agreement after a difficult hour of waiting. “Everything that was promised to the British people in the 2016 referendum and last year’s general election has been delivered. We have regained control of our currency, our laws, our trade and our waters. The deal is fantastic news for families and businesses everywhere in the UK.
It adds that it is the first agreement with zero tariffs and zero duties ever, covering a trading area that will account for £668 billion by 2019. The British Prime Minister has tweeted a picture that clearly shows his delight.
