Under the new legal system, failure to complete the technical inspection can be punished with a fine of 200 or 500 euros, depending on the case. There are three possible scenarios:
– If the ITV has expired and the vehicle is either moved or also parked in the garage or on the road, a fine of 200 euros and the immediate obligation to perform the ITV will be imposed.
– Driving with a failed ITV, i.e. continuing to drive the vehicle, although serious defects have been detected with which one is actually only allowed to drive to the workshop, will result in a fine of 200 euros. In this case, the owner of the vehicle is obliged to repair the serious defects and return to the ITV station within a maximum of 2 months to check that these defects have been repaired.
– Driving with a negative ITV, i.e. continuing to drive the vehicle with very serious defects found, is subject to a fine of 500 euros. In these cases, the vehicle is not entitled to leave the ITV station on its own, but must be transported by the use of a transport vehicle to the place of repair and returned to the ITV station within a maximum of two months.
To this situation of sanctions for not having a valid ITV, we have to add the non-coverage of the insurance company in case of damage, which can lead to high costs for the owner of the vehicle, depending on the severity of the damage.
